Waste Management: The State Grants Exceptional Support Of 200 Million FCFA To The Yaounde City Council.

On September 3,2024 the Ministry of Finance announced a financial allocation of 200million fcfa to the Yaounde City council for household waste collection in Cameroon's Politically Capital.

   This amount represents an exceptional financial support from the government for the operation to eradicate unsanitary conditions in the city of Yoaunde.The operation aims to support the " knock out punch, Yaounde Trash-free initiative" , launched on July 18 ,2024 by the Minister of Housing and Urban Development to tackle the escalating sanitation issues in Yaounde .The financial allocation of 200 million fcfa is divided as follows, 150 million (75% of the total amount) will support fuel costs for waste management operators Hysacam and Thychlofs.This allocation aims to address the difficulties faced by these companies due to a lack of funding. Preciously , yaounde mayor Luc Messi Atangana, highlighted funding shortages as a major obstacle to the operation's Additionally, Yaounde's seven districts are set to receive 35 million fcfa in funding, with 5 million fcfa specifically earmarked for the city's urban communities to   support ongoing initiatives, the remaining 15 million FCFA will go toward beautification projects in preparation for end of year festivities .A new clean up operation is set to begin this September and will last for a month , announced during a meeting on combating unsanitary conditions, convened on september 12,2024 by the Governor of the Center region, Naseri Paul Bea. As part of this clean up initiative, teams will conduct weekly deployments in all the seven districts of Yaounde specifically every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, touching Major transportation axes , neighborhoods with diplomatic missions and residence areas , surrounding schools and educational institutions, hospital and health care facilities, hotels . In 2022 , the Yaounde urban community launched an initiative to enhance waste management in challenging areas .This effort included : distributing 75,000 trash bags , providing tricycles to traditional chief's associations in the seven districts of the Mfoundi Department, enabling them to collect waste in narrow streets and other areas inaccessible to garbage collection trucks.Despite ongoing initiatives, Yaounde's sanitation situation remains alarming with: streets overwhelmed by garbages , persistent environmental degradation and risks to public health.
