Amplats is the top producer of platinum group metals with its mines in South Africa and Zimbabwe producing 3.8million ounces in 2023.Anglo American on its part,is a global mining company with a portfolio that spans diamonds, platinum, copper , and iron ore. This sale is part of the process to separate Amplats into its own company. According to the CEO of Anglo American, the placing is anticipated to increase share trading liquidity as well as to reduce the effect of flowback following the separation as a result of fewer Anglo American platinum share being spread to Anglo American's shareholders.Within the framework of a restructuring plan declared in May 2024 , Anglo American is disposing of its 79% interest in Amplats .The separation of the world's leading platinum producer is expected to be completed next year. However this could lead to capital flight from South Africa,as Amplats shares distributed to Anglo American's shareholders may not be actively traded on the Johannesburg stock exchange.
