Cocoa/Coffee:The European Union Compels New Regulations Against Deforestation.
Dernière mise à jours il y'a 4 moisThe Minister of Trade Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana,held a meeting on July 18,2024 with the heads of the European union delegation in Cameroon ahead of The approaching entry into force of the European Union rules on deforestation known in the french acronym as Règlement Européen sur la déforestation (RDUE) on January 1st 2025.

Adopted by the European union council on Mai 31st 2023 , this rules aimes at banning the exportation or commercialisation of these agriculture products towards the EU markets, products that have contributed to the degradation of the environment and deforestation of the forest after December 30th 2020.This meeting was to discuss about this rules with the actors of the sector in Cameroon that is confronted with many challenges that is to adapt to this strict standards set by the EU for the exportation of the agricultural inputs . According to Cameroon Minister of Trade ,78% of exportation of Cocoa and 65% of coffee from Cameroon is destined for commercialisation in the Eu markets with 5thousand set for the purchase of 1kilo that is 5billion per ton . Assuming that an exportation of 300 000tons present an important amount paid directly to the producers worth CFA 1500billion , highlighting the economic benefits of these products in the countries budget.The rules impose to the Cocoa/coffee sector in Cameroon,in details lay emphasis on the origine of the products up to their shipping level, avoid that production of these products should have a negative impact on the environment such as deforestation and lastly respect the criteria of equality impose by EU.According to European union delegation in the,this rules sets aims at preserving the Ecosystem.In other to respect this norms ,the Cameroonian government and actors in the sector put ahead its traditional method known as Agroforestry in the process of cocoa /coffee production that is recognised to less offensive to the environment. With the objectives of supporting Cameroon in this process,Eu is prepared to assist the country with technical expertise and resources necessary to align to the Agricultural practice to the global sustainability standards.
