Wood sector in Cameroon : 2,750 jobs lost in 2024

With the export of raw timber nearing its end and the FLEGT-VPA agreement being scrapped by the EU, industry players are rallying together to address a crisis that jeopardizes thousands of livelihoods.Faced with the growing number of problems, the Association of Wood Industry Stakeholders decided to bring together all relevant parties on March 5, 2025

The main objective of this meeting was to find consensus-based solutions to the common problems affecting the industry. This gathering according to actors of the sector is justified by the current situation, which is quite worrisome for the  industry due to the numerous problems we are facing. The crisis is having a significant impact on the national economy. In 2024, 103 out of 303 wood processing units were forced to shut down, leading to the loss of 2,750 jobs.stakeholders in the sector warns that 75 more companies are at risk of closure if a solution is not found soon. The sector's stakeholders are showing a strong commitment to working closely with the authorities to safeguard this critical sector for the country's economy. As they await tangible solutions, the wood industry remains in a state of heightened alert, hopeful that this collaborative effort will yield measures to mitigate economic losses and protect employment.Cameroon has failed to reach 50% of the volume exported in 2023, resulting in negative consequences for sector employment
