Inclusion : MTN and UNHCR Unite to Digitize the Refugee Camp Economy
Dernière mise à jours il y'a 8 heuresThe MTN Group officialized, on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, the signing of a multi-year agreement with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The agreement provides for the massive deployment of network infrastructure and generalized access to mobile money services for the benefit of displaced populations and host communities. By primarily targeting Rwanda, Uganda, and South Sudan, the pan-African telecommunications leader intends to transform humanitarian assistance into an engine of economic empowerment, allowing families to integrate into modern financial circuits.

The major challenge of the collaboration lies in removing the administrative and financial barriers that isolate refugees. Until now, the lack of recognized identification documents constituted a significant obstacle to acquiring SIM cards, thus blocking access to essential communication tools. The program also tackles the prohibitive cost of handsets and data, while densifying network coverage in areas often neglected by traditional investments. According to UNHCR statistics, more than 20 million people live in countries covered by MTN, representing a market segment that has been marginalized until now, but whose potential for economic participation is real once technological barriers are removed.
This approach is part of the global "Connectivity for Refugees" initiative, launched during the Global Refugee Forum in 2023, with the goal of connecting 20 million displaced people by 2030. For MTN, digital access is no longer perceived as a mere advantage, but as a fundamental right indispensable to the protection and dignity of individuals. Although financial details have not been disclosed, the signal sent to the markets underscores a desire to reconcile long-term profitability with corporate social responsibility. For the remainder of the 2026 fiscal year, the success of the project will depend on the partners' ability to streamline the use of mobile credit for aid payments, progressively substituting material distributions with secure digital fund transfers.

Actually, now that I try out the links on my message, above, none of them take me to the secure site. Only my shortcut on my desktop, which I created years ago.
