Cameroon: UNESCO Allocates $ 45Million To Boost Literacy Efforts.

The General Director of the Organization , Audrey Azoulay , personally made the trip to yaounde to take part in the commemoration of the 58th edition of the International Literacy Day .In addition, she pledged that UNESCO will continue to provide various forms of support to strengthen distance learning in Cameroon .She made the commitment during her visit to the Distance Learning Centre of the Ministry of Secondary Education.Literacy continues to be a significant world wide challenge, 754 million adults nowadays cannot read or write. Cameroon is to be congratulated on its advances in literacy, according to official sources the literacy rate has reached 65% in rural zones and 88% in urban areas.The International Monetary Fund, indicates that the average literacy rate in Sub-saharan Africa is around 65%. With this funding UNESCO and Cameroon will work together to modernize School curricula with a special focus on multilingual education.This initiative in Cameroon comes in addition to the one already undertaken by UNESCO in many other African countries.In recent years , the Organization has notably mobilized $ 15,7 million for education in Burundi, $ 39,5million in Ivory Coast, $10.7million in Congo , $ 48,2 million in Chad .
