Entrepreneurship: Women Take Center Stage( Case Study Cameroon)

Entrepreneurship is a source of job creation as well as a major driver of economic development in our society.

Over the past 3 decades, female entrepreneurship has become increasingly important in most industrialized countries but also in developing countries.Women's entrepreneurship in Cameroon is gaining momentum , despite being largely centered on small-scale income -generating activities such as agriculture, tailoring , restaurants etc . Over 40% of businesses created are women-owned , according to the Ministry of Small and Medium-Sized Entreprises report. In addition , the said Ministry has committed to considering female entrepreneurship as a cornerstone of the private sector development strategy . Despite being relatively lower than men's, women's involvement in business management is experiencing a notable uptrend, according to Gecam, 37 companies are led by women out of more than 368 members .According to National Statistics in Cameroon, morethan 50% of the population actively involved in businesses are women . Recently in June 2024 ,Cameroon hosted the National Women's Entrepreneurship Expo, with the goal of boosting women's involvement in Cameroon's economic fabric. Despite their dynamism , Cameroonian women entrepreneur encounter various obstacles, particularly in accessing finance . With a significant presence in micro-enterprises  39% and less representation in larger enterprises 14%,women occupy 43% of leadership positions, predominantly in Micro-enterprises 44% compared to only 18% in larger companies.Their active participation in entrepreneurship helps to fight against poverty, reduce the level of unemployment and contribute to the national economy.The involvement of women in the development of private in Cameroon constitutes a great opportunity to reap all benefits of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AFCFTA ).
