Energy Supply In Cameroon : Cameroon To Construct A Hydroelectric Plant To Supply The North Region And Neighbouring Chad.

The CEO of Electricity Development Corporation, Théodore Nsangou signed a Contract with a consortium led by the French firm ISL on July 17 2024,for the Materialisation of the said project to begin in 2025.

The targets regions for this new dam project include the Northern regions,The interconnection of the country's northern and southern grids and potential electricity exports to neighbouring chad .The contract covers technical, financial studies, socio-economic studies to be completed by the end of 2024 will see the service provider to conduct feasibility studies for a 250 to 300MW Hydroelectric plan at the base of the Mbakaou reservoir dam in the Adamaoua regions . The total amount for this project according to the EDC is not known, nevertheless the new initiative will permit the integration of floating solar panels on the existing Mbakaou reservoir,that will significantly boost the country -wide energy supply.As outlined in the National Development Strategy 2020-20230, Cameroon aims to reach 5000MW of installed capacity by 2030.The Mbakaou plan project aims to support the transformer station planned in Adamaoua,that is the chad-Cameroon electrical grid interconnection to transport the anticipated energy output through a new 40-kilometer transmission line.The Mbakaou dam plant is expected to solve the persistent electricity problems in the nothern regions of Cameroon.Eventhou there is the presence of the Lagdo dam to supply this area but its production level is below the capacity to sustain these localities on the otherside the Bini à Warak dam project faces delay.Overall the new project of the 250 to 300 Mbakaou plan will provide a stable , clean and cost-effective energy supply.
