Economy: CFA 60.71 Billion Initiative To Combat Food Insecurity In Cameroon Launched In Northwest Region.

August 22,2024 the he Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Gabriel Mbairobe has launched in Bamenda the Emergency project to combat food crisis in Cameroon (Pulcca).

This initiative is a direct response to the phenomenon of food insecurity affecting certain regions in Cameroon . To remind that Pulcca project is a Three -year initiative that began in January 2023 and is set to be completed by 2025 . Pulcca project is funded by CFA 59.23billion world Bank loan along with an additional CFA 1.48 Billion funded by the Cameroonian government.Food security crisis in Cameroon has been driven by a combination of many factors : rise of fertilizer prices, food prices and the ongoing crisis in the Anglophones zones in the country and climate change therefore  project is aimed at strengthening long-term economic, community resilience and climate and combatting the short-term impacts of food and alimentation insecurity in the targeted of  Northern Part of the Country, the East, North West and South West Regions and will be implemented through a partnership between the world food program , the food and agriculture organisation,the Cameroon's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Ministry of Industries,Livestock ,fisheries and Animal industries with the aim of reaching 265, 490 beneficiaries and 159,000 farmers, breeders, fishermen.  The initiative launched in Bamenda by Minister Gabriel Mbairobe has 3 components in detail: the 1st component is to provide humanitarian assiastance to vulnerable population, the 2nd component is aimed at strengthening the productive capacity of local farmers by providing them with improved seeds, seedlings , fertilizer and agricultural tools ,the 3rd component of the project will be aimed at constructing community infrastructure to improve water management and build resilience against climate change shocks .The initiative is expected to ensure sustainable food production and enhance the livehoods of the target farmers as recommended by the Head of State President Paul Biya, to materialise this recommendation during the launching event farm inputs were distributed to farmers . At the event, Minister Gabriel Mbairobe has call on the farmers to make good use of the distributed tools and inputs that will help them recover and strengthen their economic capabilities.
