Waste Management: Cameroon Inaugurates Central Africa's First Waste Transfer Station.

The infrastructure was inaugurated on Wednesday, September 25,2024 in Youpwé neighborhood of Douala, in presence of the Minister of Decentralisation and Local Development Georges Elanga Obam and the Minister of Housing and Urban Development Celestine Ketcha Courtes.The Cameroon Hygiene and Sanitation company (hysacam) is developing a program to build waste transfer centers in Douala.The deployment of waste transfer stations will lead to lower waste collection costs in urban areas .This involves regrouping garbage trucks before transporting it to treatment facilities using high -capacity , cost -effective means.Administrative authorities of the Hysacam reports that, the waste transfer site will lower transportation costs by 23% from CFA 13, 000 per tonne to CFA 10,500 per tonne bill to the Douala City Council.The facility wil double as a dump site for oversized waste , allowing residents to dispose of large items .As part of efforts to enhance urban cleanliness, 2 additional waste transfer centers are expected to be built in Douala by 2025 , complementing existing infrastructure and improve waste management services. These transfer centers will play a key role in promoting a circular economy by allowing for the efficient sorting and recycling of waste, leveraging the expertise of specialized waste management companies.
